University of Michigan-Dearborn Writing Award Ceremony
First I would like to congratulate those who received an award for their outstanding work. As each student walked up to the front to receive their award you could see their appreciation for those that supported them, and self confidence. The parents of these academic achievers must be very proud.
When I walked into the room, and looked around I was surprised at how very few people attended the ceremony. I myself found the ceremony to be quite intriguing. I say this because I felt when the writers read their stories they put themselves in the situation. It made it seem more interesting and caught my attention. One that I would like to mention is Holly Carlisle who wrote “point of no return”. It begins when a women who is in love with a man, who she eventually marries, and the relationship becomes abusive. The women would blame herself for the abuse, and she believes that he never meant to hurt her. This is typical in many domestic abusive relationships. At the end though she realizes that she deserves better and leaves. At the end of the story she writes “ where my story ends another story begins”. I feel it get to the point of her story that it is not the person that needs to be changed , but the situation itself.
Another story was the one by Stephanie Hymes “Socially Challenged”. This is about a parent who decides to home school her children even though her family is against the idea. She didn’t allow others opinion to change what she thought was best for her girls. These students have a gift, and we should give them the encouragement they need to help them succeed in life.
